Hong Wai Biography

Hong Wai (洪慧) is a Paris-based contemporary artist and scholar born in Shanghai, raised in Macao, and living and working in Paris for two decades. Grounded in nearly 30 years of traditional ink practice, her work recontextualizes Chinese ink painting through a distinctly feminine, transnational lens, subverting historically male-dominated literati traditions by synthesizing Eastern calligraphy with Western textile aesthetics, material philosophy, and physical AI technology.

Educated at National Taiwan University and the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris—where she completed her Master’s thesis on the contemporary expression of Chinese Literati art—Hong Wai merges rigorous intellectual inquiry with material innovation. Her artistic lineage draws equal inspiration from classical Chinese ink masters, conceptual art (notably Sophie Calle), Hong Kong’s vibrant pop culture, and two decades of Parisian life. and the nuances of Parisian life.

Hong Wai is the creator of "Lace Calligraphy," an artistic language that fuses Western lace aesthetics with Eastern brushwork. Treating the traditional brush as a weaving needle, she transforms Chinese ideograms into sculptural textiles that explore themes of intimacy, memory, gender, and the immigrant experience. This approach gained international acclaim through her Secret de Boudoir series, which led to a historic global collaboration with French lingerie house Aubade Paris ("Encre de Chine" collection), translating her ink masterworks into French lace and Swiss embroidery.

As a pioneer in the intersection of traditional craft and artificial intelligence, Hong Wai is a lead artist in the HUMANARTY Machine Learning Artist Program. She trained Hanson Robotics' Sophia the Robot in her signature aesthetic, initiating a groundbreaking cross-species partnership. Through their flagship Soul Mates project, Hong Wai and Sophia pioneer 3D-Woven Lace Calligraphy, converting gesture and robotic motor control into physical masterworks, monumental spatial sculptures (Whisper of the Known), and transparent OLED holographic displays authenticated via Verisart blockchain provenance.

To ensure complete coverage across her 30-year career, her practice should be organized into five core series pillars. This captures her evolution from traditional ink wash and contemporary ink painting to material textile subversion, up to her current physical AI breakthroughs.

Master Series

Soul Mates & Physical AI Co-Authorship (2025–Present)

  • The Concept: The futuristic evolution of her practice. In partnership with Hanson Robotics' Sophia the Robot, Hong Wai translates traditional brush mechanics and lace sculptural forms into machine learning algorithms and physically formed, authenticated masterworks.
  • Key Media & Works: 3D-Woven Lace Calligraphy, the Whisper of the Known physical sculpture series, transparent OLED holographic displays, and Verisart blockchain-authenticated physical masterworks.
  • Themes: Post-human co-authorship, machine perception, spatial media, and the preservation of heritage craft through synthetic intelligence.

Lace Calligraphy Series (2020–Present)

  • The Concept: Hong Wai’s signature material breakthrough. Treating the traditional Chinese brush as a weaving needle, she fuses Western lace aesthetics with Eastern calligraphic structures, transforming language into tactile 3D textile sculptures across expanding spatial dimensions.
  • Evolving Formats:
  • Canvas Sculptural Origins: Commenced with the One Life, One Dream project—an interview-based study translating the oral histories, memories, and personal narratives of immigrants into woven calligraphic forms on canvas.
  • The Invisible Canvas & Floating Islands: Translucent, free-standing textile architectures that suspend characters directly in space, eliminating traditional canvas backdrops to interact dynamically with light and shadow.
  • Scholar’s Rock Formats: Three-dimensional lace sculptures echoing classical literati Gongshi (scholar’s rocks), synthesizing organic natural erosion aesthetics with woven text.
  • Co-Species Media: Advanced physical AI iterations co-created with Sophia the Robot, integrating metallic alloys, robotic motor actuation, and novel material applications.
  • Key Media & Works: Pleated lace, metallic threads, three-dimensional ideograms, floating island installations, scholar’s rock textile sculptures, and physical AI co-creations.
  • Themes: Subverting male-dominated literati brushwork, female agency, sensory intimacy, immigrant oral memory (One Life, One Dream), Hong Kong pop culture motifs, and two decades of Parisian life.

The Secret de Boudoir Series & Aubade Collaboration (2013–2021)

  • The Concept: A modern, cross-cultural reinterpretation of European Vanitas paintings. Ink wash techniques are layered with delicate lace textures to explore the feminine body and personal memory.
  • Key Media & Works: Ink and wash on paper, mixed media textile works, and the historic Encre de Chine global collection with French lingerie house Aubade Paris (translating her paintings into French lace and Swiss embroidery).
  • Themes: Bodily autonomy, sensory intimacy, cross-cultural craft, and the subversion of historical representations of women in art history.

Alternative Landscapes Series (2018–Present)

  • The Concept: Contemplative ink masterworks that honor and modernize the spirit of the Chinese Literati (Shanshui).
  • Key Media & Works: Layered ink washes on raw silver Xuan paper, translucent paper folds, and shadowy topographical compositions.
  • Themes: Concealment and revelation, spatial contemplation, organic geometry, and the quiet power of nature.

The Moonlight Series (2017–2024)

  • The Technique: Executed using Hong Wai’s technique of weaving with ink and Chinese brush, where intricate, intersecting brushlines build up the rich, tactile textures of tree bark and natural canopies.
  • The Concept: A meditative exploration capturing the ethereal interplay between light, shadow, form, and emptiness to invite spiritual contemplation between the physical and metaphysical realms.
  • Medium & Dimensions: Chinese ink on golden Xuan paper mounted on wood.
