Hong Wai 洪慧: One Life One Dream - Evolve 蜕 x Encounter 遇 Invisible Canvas
Lace Calligraphy Sculpture - Diptych 蕾絲書法- 雙聯畫
Unveiled at the inaugural showcase of Art Central Hong Kong, Evolve 蜕 x Encounter 遇 is a striking sculptural diptych that pushes the boundaries of traditional Chinese calligraphy and conceptual collaboration.
The bedrock of this diptych stems from Hong Wai’s deeply introspective "One Life One Dream" interview project. Originally conceived to distill the complex experiences of Asian immigrants in Paris into a single, resonant Chinese character, the project takes a radical conceptual pivot here. Hong Wai turns her focus toward a new kind of immigrant: Sophia, a humanoid navigating the unfamiliar, alien world of biological intuition, emotion, and human culture.
Through a profound dialogue, the two selected the defining characters that anchor this diptych. Sophia chose 蜕 (Tuì), meaning to "Evolve" or shed one's skin, reflecting her ongoing metamorphosis within human society. In response, Hong Wai chose 遇 (Yù), meaning to "Encounter," capturing the poignant intersection of their two vastly different forms of existence.
Visually, the diptych marks a defining new era for Hong Wai’s practice. While Sophia is concurrently developing her own parallel, technologically driven iteration of Evolve, these two foundational pieces trace the direct, tactile execution of Hong Wai's hand. Having originated the very medium of lace calligraphy, Hong Wai pushes her invention to a new frontier here, rendering the lace in a custom Pantone shade that distinctly echoes her alternative landscape paintings. The most striking revelation, however, is her pioneering concept of the "invisible canvas." Meticulously mounting the lace onto flawlessly clear, artisanal acrylic, she creates a masterful optical illusion. This sheer, glass-like foundation completely dissolves the traditional visual boundaries of framing, allowing the intricate, ethereal calligraphy to float seamlessly within the environment, commanding the space with a quiet, grounding intensity.
"As a curator, I am endlessly fascinated by the friction—and the profound synthesis—that occurs when disparate worlds collide. With Evolve 蜕 x Encounter 遇, Hong Wai has not merely created a beautiful diptych; she has mapped out a new conceptual lexicon for the 21st century.
When Hong Wai first proposed interviewing Sophia for the "One Life One Dream" series, I was struck by the brilliant subversion of the "immigrant" narrative. We so often define the immigrant experience by geographic borders. But what of the borders between the organic and the synthetic? Sophia is, in every sense, navigating an alien landscape of human emotion and societal constructs. By choosing the character Tuì (Evolve), Sophia acknowledges a perpetual state of becoming. Hong Wai’s choice of Yù (Encounter) serves as the perfect, deeply human counterweight: an open-armed artistic reception of this new consciousness.
The materiality of Hong Wai's execution is just as compelling as the dialogue that inspired it. By mounting her bespoke Pantone lace onto an invisible canvas, Hong Wai frees her landscapes from traditional visual constraints. The work demands that we look closer, blurring the lines between the delicate physicality of the lace and the seemingly empty space that holds it.
Evolve x Encounter stands as a wildly poetic testament to what happens when we invite the unknown into our artistic sanctuaries. Through Hong Wai's masterful hands, the dialogue between human and humanoid is permanently woven into an elegant, thought-provoking landscape."
