Hong Wai 洪慧: One Life One Dream - River 谿
River – Lace Calligraphy Landscape Sculpture 谿 – 蕾絲書法山水雕塑
Continuing the powerful narrative established in the series premiered at VOLTA Basel 2025, the 'River 谿' lace calligraphy landscape sculpture shifts our gaze from the violent rupture of departure to the quiet, relentless persistence of adaptation. If its predecessor, Waterfall, represented the traumatic, decisive plunge into the unknown, River intimately explores the long, meandering journey of the immigrant experience that follows. Here, Hong Wai purposefully elongates her hardened lace technique, guiding the material across the controlled arena of the silk canvas in sweeping, undulating currents. The character 谿 (meaning "mountain stream" or "valley river") is sculpted into a sinuous topography, mirroring the immigrant’s continuous navigation through foreign social landscapes—finding paths around immovable obstacles, steadily carving out a new existence, and carrying the rich sediment of cultural memory forward.
The black lace, stripped of its traditional domestic delicacy, is manipulated into gentle ridges and deep, winding valleys. These forms cast elongated shadows that suggest the slow, deliberate passage of time, echoing the psychological marathon of assimilation. By juxtaposing the fluid, directional energy of the sculpted lace against the static elegance of the silk backdrop, Hong Wai highlights a different manifestation of resilience: not the explosive force required to sever ties, but the sustained stamina needed to endure and flow onward. 'River 谿' is a profound meditation on integration and evolving identity; hovering beautifully between wall relief and calligraphic drawing, it asserts that while a river must navigate the contours of a new land, it possesses the quiet, irrevocable power to ultimately reshape the very earth it touches.
